Working during a long sick leave
If your health permits it and you feel ready, you can return to work during a long sick leave with partial capacity or adjusted working conditions. It is not mandatory, but just an option that you, your doctor, and employer can agree on.

Working on a long sick leave can be a good option, because:
- you can return to work step-by-step. You don’t have to immediately continue with your initial workload and assignments.
- you can restore your pre-sick leave salary. The employer will pay the salary according to your workload and The Estonian Health Insurance Fund will cover the difference.
- work arrangements can be adjusted according to your health. For example, work time, capacity, assignments or your work environment.
- you can maintain your work relationships and not stay away for too long. Working part-time helps you maintain your skills, confidence, and relationships with colleagues.
- you can recover quicker if you’re communicating with people and feel you’re needed.

From the 31st sick day on
You can start your adjusted work schedule on the 31st day of illness.
Sick leave doesn’t cease
Even while returning to work during a long sick leave, the sick leave remains valid.
Salary restored
The employer will pay at least 50% of your salary for the work done and The Estonian Health Insurance Fund will cover the difference to restore your pre-sick leave salary.
Returning to work is voluntary
Working is possible if your doctor allows it, you wish to do so, and if your employer can provide the necessary adjustments.

What are the next steps if you wish to work during a long sick leave?
Consult with your doctor
The doctor will determine if your health will allow you to work with a partial workload or with adjusted working conditions. Before the appointment, think through what kinds of work you could do and in what capacity.
Before consulting a doctor, think about:
- how many hours or days a week can you work
- which assignments constitute a suitable capacity
- which activities can potentially worsen your condition
- if you need more breaks or a different work schedule
Discuss different options with your employer
If the doctor finds that your condition allows you to return to work under certain conditions, you should also talk to your employer about how your work can be adjusted. The employer doesn’t have to create a new position. Rather, they can evaluate if your existing work, schedule, and position can be adjusted temporarily according to the conditions set by your doctor.
For example:
- a shorter work day or a smaller capacity
- easier or different assignments
- flexible hours
- more frequent breaks
- a temporarily smaller physical or mental workload
Please note
Your employer does not need to know your diagnosis – only your work conditions and which assignments need to be adjusted according to your condition.

Agree on a fitting work arrangement
You and your employer need to agree on the workload, assignments, and how long these conditions will be in effect. If needed, these conditions can be reviewed later on. Returning to work doesn’t mean immediately restoring your initial workload.
Please note
If needed, this agreement can be changed or may cease, if your condition requires it or if you wish to return to work full time.

Keep an eye on your well-being
Inform your doctor and employer if the agreed work arrangement doesn’t work or there have been changes in your condition that require attention. Recovery shall always be number one.
