Help after childbirth
After giving birth, a midwife at the hospital helps women adjust physically and mentally.

During the hospital stay, the midwife provides guidance on caring for and breastfeeding the newborn and monitors the baby's condition and adjustment.
Sometimes the midwife also makes home visits, for example in the case of a home birth. The purpose of a home visit is to assess the woman's recovery and the baby's adjustment, provide advice on how to cope with everyday life and care for the newborn.
Six to eight weeks after giving birth, it is advisable to visit the midwife or gynecologist who monitored the pregnancy.
During the visit, the birth experience will be discussed, recovery will be assessed, an examination will be performed if necessary, and advice will be given on breastfeeding and contraception. If necessary, you can also make an appointment earlier.
In many hospitals, you can see a midwife or doctor after giving birth, even after early discharge, for example, for newborn examinations and vaccinations, breastfeeding counseling, a pediatrician's appointment, or post-cesarean wound care.

Breastfeeding counseling
Breastfeeding is not always easy and natural for everyone. It can be painful, and the baby may not be able to get milk right away.
A midwife also supports the mother with breastfeeding and any problems that may arise, such as painful breastfeeding, cracked nipples, mastitis or fungal infections, and checks the baby's latch. The correct latch is important for the proper development of the mouth and jaw muscles and to prevent later teething problems.
Breastfeeding counseling is offered by all hospitals that provide maternity care, although the arrangements may vary between them.

After the birth of the child
Give your child a name
No later than one month after the date of birth, the child must be given a name, i.e. the birth must be registered. This can be done by all parents via the e-population register(Opens in new tab), regardless of whether they are married or not.
Choose a family doctor for your child
Upon birth, the hospital will issue a personal identification code for the child. Once the child has been registered with a name, the family can apply for birth benefits. It is important to choose a family doctor for the child. The child will be added to the list of either the father's or mother's family doctor. You can view the procedures related to the birth of a child under the childbirth events service(Opens in new tab).
Take your child for a health check-up
Once your child has a family doctor, you should take them for a check-up one week after birth. From then on, your child will have regular health check-ups until they reach the age of 1.5. Find out more about what is monitored during health check-ups.
