Pregnancy
A midwife diagnoses pregnancy, assesses health risks, and monitors the course of pregnancy and fetal development by prescribing or performing necessary tests and analyses.

If the pregnancy is progressing normally and the woman is in good health, she can visit a midwife instead of a gynecologist for pregnancy monitoring. If a problem or risk arises, a gynecologist or specialist is always involved. High-risk pregnancies are generally monitored by a gynecologist.
In addition to examinations, midwives provide advice on issues related to pregnancy, such as alleviating discomfort, nutrition, exercise, and preparing for childbirth and parenthood.
Midwives have the right to issue certificates of incapacity for work for maternity leave and temporary relief of working conditions during pregnancy, as well as to prescribe treatment and write prescriptions, for example, for the treatment of anemia during pregnancy and mild vaginitis. If necessary, the midwife will refer the woman to a doctor.
The organization of prenatal care may vary from region to region in Estonia. In some medical institutions, the first visit is to the midwife, followed by a visit to the gynecologist, who refers low-risk pregnant women to the midwife for further monitoring.
A pregnant woman living in Estonia whose pregnancy has been confirmed by a doctor or midwife has the right to health insurance. Read more about options for obtaining health insurance.
