Family planning
Midwives advise both women and men on sexual health, family planning, and the use of contraceptives.

In addition, midwives explain the effects, contraindications, and safety of various methods to families planning to have a child and perform gynecological examinations on women if necessary.
Midwives have the right to write prescriptions for contraceptives. If an intrauterine device (IUD) is desired, the midwife will perform the necessary tests and analyses and issue a prescription; the IUD is inserted by a gynecologist. If necessary, the midwife also treats mild cases of vaginitis.
Midwives also provide advice on unwanted pregnancies, termination or miscarriage, gynecological diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and domestic and sexual violence. Midwives with special training also work in youth counseling centers throughout Estonia.

If getting pregnant does not go as expected
If getting pregnant is not as easy as expected, you may want to consider IVF treatment and embryo transfer services. Since 2018, the Health Insurance Fund has been fully funding in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer services and medications.
Women up to the age of 40 (inclusive) can purchase the medications necessary for in vitro fertilization from a pharmacy at a 100% discount. At the pharmacy, you only have to pay the prescription fee of €3.50 and the portion exceeding the maximum price of the subsidized medication if the medication is more expensive than the Health Insurance Fund's subsidy list.
For more information about different medications and in vitro fertilization, ask your doctor.
